EURO ZONE INFLATION RISES TO HOTTER-THAN-EXPECTED 2.5% IN JANUARY

Euro zone inflation accelerated to 2.5% in January, above the expected 2.4%.

The rise in inflation was driven by the fading base effects from lower energy prices.

Economists had expected inflation to remain unchanged at 2.4% from December.

Headline inflation in the euro zone had been as low as 1.7% in September before re-accelerating.

The European Central Bank had previously stated that disinflation was “well on track.”
